Horsin' around...

Monday, August 8, 2011

I Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend! I found myself hanging out with a crazy Hubs, a little man, two dogs & a horse....

Do you remember me saying that I wasn't a huge fan of the shade on this dazzlin' stallion?
..Well I couldn't deal with it's blahness anymore. So I whipped out some left over cotton fabric (looks like linen), a thick black sharpie & for no cost recovered the shade with words....More specifically, I wrote a free flowing love letter to Olly from his Mommy & Daddy...and I must say I love the edge it gives his room. And how many little boys do you know who have lamp shades for their reading nook covered in words? Not too many that I know of ;.) For those who think I have lost my marbles & decor sense feel free to skip the rest of the post so I can preserve my credibility haha...the rest of you thanks for supporting me & my crazy idea haha. It may not be the look for everyone, but it's good for us because it fits the whimsical feel of his room...The idea of him having a serious room went out the window the minute I hung up a family portrait involving mustaches haha.

I hope it's something that sparks the idea in him as he is growing up to create and think outside the box....well, let's hope that's what he takes away from it and not to go around the house writing on mommy's lamps shades ;./ haha. Have a great day!

I love it! It's so sweet and creative and I'm jealous of your pretty handwriting!

How did you do it??

My Sparrows Nest said...

I love this. I found the photo on Pinterest and followed you here. How hard was it to put the fabric on the shade? That seems intimidating to me. I think it's beautiful and so sweet.

Olly's mama said...

It was super easy just took a sharpie and a little freestyle writing ;.)

My sparrow's nest...Welcome to the blog ;.) I just cut the fabric to size of a shade I already had and used some spray adhesive and worked my way around the shade. If it seems crazy overwhelming it's not, you can totally handle it or you can always buy a shade that has fabric you like to write on without changing it. Welcome again! ;.)

I am in the process of putting the finishing touches on my son's nursery, and I think this idea will definitely come into play. I shared this with my readers in my Saturday Seven lineup this weekend! http://www.positivelysplendid.com/2011/10/saturday-seven-no-27.html

Oh my goodness. As a writer, I love things w/ words, newsprint, handwriting, etc. How cute would something like this be in a master bedroom with wedding vows written on the shade? Love the idea. TY for sharing.

I saw this on Pinterest and loved the unique idea. Last night, I got brave and wrote the lyrics to "our song" directly on the linen-color lampshade. It turned out great - thanks!!!

Olly's mama said...

awww that's so exciting & awesome! I love the "your song" idea! thanks so much again!

Thanks so much for posting this! It inspired me to make my own version! I did mine in burlap instead of linen which didn't turn out quite as well, but I liked the over all effect.

Love, love, love this idea!!! So creative! I have too many blah lamp shades to re-invent. Don't know what I am going to write, but I am going to use this idea on one of my shades. Thanks for the great idea!

I love this idea. I also followed my way over from Pinterest! I also must know where you got the white deer head. I have been looking for one exactly like it but can not find just the right one.

Got to know where you got the lamp! Beautiful base!

Love this idea! Reminds me of our tall floor lamp - my teens write messages back & forth on its inverted plastic shade with dry erase markers! Guests think we've lost our minds, but I love it :)

I love this idea for my home office, where I write stories! I could put one of my existing stories or write something new! Hmm... ideas.

Credilya said...

Hrm...I wonder how easy it would be to do this on a conical shape rather than the flat barrel. Mine are just slightly inverted at the top so it might take some work to get the fabric to wrap well and fit.

Lovely idea!

Jamie Gupton said...

Pinning this right now! Thank you!

Anonymous said...

did you write it and THEN glue the fabric onto the shade. or glue the fabric on and THEN write the letter? Looks great!

litsje said...

Also on my to do list. Stunning idea.

Christina Taylor said...

Instead of adhering fabric to my shade, and then writing... I just wrote directly on my lampshade!! It blurred a little, but I like the effect. I wrote out the lyrics to "I Cross My Heart" by George Strait, because my husband surprised me on our wedding day by singing it to me during our ceremony (I completely didn't know that he had changed the order of the ceremony to add it in!!) A special way to display meaningful words in our family!! :) Thanks for the idea!
