Mirror, mirror on the table?!

Monday, January 9, 2012

Where did our weekend go? The hubs and I worked really hard but those two days just disappered quickly. Unfortunately,we did not tackle the dresser from our bedroom but we did work on a nightstand for my side of the bed. Recently I uncovered this ole' gal from our storage shed outside...

She's been homeless since leaving Baltimore because she previously lived in our guest room, which we no longer have here. I thought that she might be just what my side of the bed needed. So the hubs and I worked some magic so she could join us in the house again.

Here was my inspiration.
I have been LUSTING after one of these mirrored beauties for a lonnngggggg time. However, they have always been out of my price range. So with a $120 investment over the weekend (on paint, hardware, epoxy, mirrored panels, and paying someone else to cut it for us) this is what the Hubs and I came up with.

It was a beautiful table before...but now I just love how she sparkles in the room! What's even more awesome is that the Hubs drilled a hole through the back of the nightstand so that I can run my cords through the top drawer and charge my "daily bits of technology" without having to look at them. I have a love-hate relationship with cords. I love what they do, I hate how they look. Which is why I don't even put an alarm clock in my room. I know I need some crazy pills.
After a long weekend of furniture re-vamping, I now need a nice long shower, a big heavy blanket, and to watch a movie in my bed. Where I can now place my "secret toast & jam" on the beside table. Woooo whooo!
Ohhhh it's the little things. I hope you all had a restful weekend. Let's kick this week in the you know what! I will see you lovelies tomorrow when I will hopefully have my creative batteries re-charged.

update *Disclaimer: The Hubs and I are in no way mirror professionals. I just happen to be a girl with an idea who had some help to make it happen. We actually had one panel break and found out it was because we did not use enough epoxy behind it, womp womp-but mistakes happen, especially with DIY.  However, contact your local glass shop for all questions because they are the masters with all the answers and they can even epoxy the mirror on for you. Helpful side tip for anyone else attempting the same look: We also used little nylon washers on the back side of the knobs so the metal would not be directly against the mirror.

That is CRAZY beautiful!!! Perfect in every way!

How were the holes made for the knobs without breaking the mirror? Did the professional drill them?

Olly's mama said...

Thanks Julie! Our local glass shop cut the mirror and drilled the holes in it based off of the previous holes on the drawer front. It cost us around $90 of the $120 we spent but it was worth it to let the professionals do it on this project ;.)

Great job C + R, as always! You guys should do a little pop up shop with your creations at your house this summer. You know, one weekend in your yard. People would LOVE it!

PS. Can I ask where you got the fabric for your headboard? It looks familiar... I've been on the search for curtain fabric and really like this pattern!

Olly's mama said...

Thanks so much everyone! The color is Rustoleum spray paint in dark grey high gloss with clear gloss enamel over the top.
@Renee that's so funny that you want it for curtains because it was a curtain we cut up for the headboard haha. It is from West elm & the last time I saw it, I was on sale. Hope this helps!
Thanks again

I love it. I bought a mirrored jewelry end table for my daughter at Marshalls for only $50...but it had a cracked mirror. I figured I cud replace mirror. The glass store wanted $175 just to replace the tiny mirror because he said it was so hard to drill holes for the pulls. Pshaw....no way. So we had them cut the mirror $6 and as it turned out we took the screws out of the pulls and just glued them onto the drawer front mirror. Did you guys drill for the pulls or glue them on. It looks great... as did ours....and they are soo expensive to buy. Great job becky@reinventingtheordinary.com

Great job. It looks fantastic. May I ask who cut the mirrors?

Olly's mama said...

Thanks so much everyone! We had the mirror cut at a local glass shop inexpensively. ;.)

Beautiful job! I thought I might offer a tip to save on the cost of cutting the mirror. My husband is a Glazier (he installs glass and mirrors for a living) and many times there is an trade apprenticeship school in the area. You may be able to have a student cut the glass for a fraction of the cost. It's definitely worth looking into!

It is very nice however I think having a piece of mirror for the top would have been the finishing touch. And would reflect nice light from the window.

Hi there! I was sent over by Centsational Girl. This is just fabulous. I actually just made a post about 2 weeks ago about how I was going to attempt to DIY a mirrored buffet for my dining room. I'm still looking for the perfect piece of furniture, but when I do I'm def gonna use some of your pointers. The hole for your cords was genius. Love it!

Stunning! Question: How did you get the paint to be so shiny? I have painted many pieces of furniture and have never been able to get it to look that smooth and shiny.

Olly's mama said...

Thanks! I used a top coat of clear high gloss enamel spray paint by Rustoleum. I hope this helps. Happy painting ;.)

I already asked about the knobs, but one more question - did you use spray paint on this or roll it? I'm obsessing over it, it's just that gorgeous!
