summer nails {gone bananas}

Well my friends...I did it! I crossed one of the items off of my 30 before 30 list this weekend. I tackled my desire to give myself an at home manicure made to look like I spent time at the salon and dished out some dough for it. However, this gal saved her pennies and enjoyed the weekend sporting some fun summery nails.

I can't take all the credit. Here are the team players that made it all possible.

Nail pads to replace yucky cotton balls from Sephora along with remover by essie purchased at Target.

Finger bowl from Anthropologie, Nail file from Target as well as cuticle scissors from Target.

The most AMAZING rose water cuticle oil from Target.

Base coat and color by essie found at Target. The color is called (e-nuf is e-nuf). The top coat is from Sephora.
And here is my secret weapon. Brace yourself. You people are going to think I lost my marbles.....

A banana. If I had a super hero cape for this banana to wear I would have put one on it. Yep I said it. This little yellow baby has special nail painting powers....I'll show you how in a second....

I first started by using my sassy and wild file. It made me feel like a pink nail wearing vixen just by using it.

I soaked my nails in sudsy lemon water and used the cuticle scissors.

I then repaired my cuticles with the rose water oil.

Then I got my paint on. Base coat, color x2, top coat and then I let those babies dry, dry, dry.

The biggest tip I can offer is to use the banana while painting the color on your nails. It allows you to have your palm down flat while your nails are propped up and the curve allows you to paint along the side easier. Don't hate on me until you try it.

And then I got to parade those dazzling pink darlins' around.

I was so excited to be able to scratch something else off of the list. I'm not going to be working at a professional salon any time soon but I'm just glad I got through the entire process while taking care of a toddler at the same time. It feels like a huge victory. For those who think I am a little looney for using a banana and a little looney because I thought that mastering a manicure was important enough for a 30 by 30 are correct in your thinking. I am a little crazy. However, in the past me trying to paint my nails has been a disaster. A paint spilling, outside of the line painting, a smudge in the wet paint kind of experience. So yay for second chances 100th chances and perseverance.

I hope you all had a triumphant weekend as well! Tomorrow I have a giveaway so make sure and come by and enter to win! I'll see you lovelies soon! As for now, I am off to go pitch a fit  cry because I just found out that Kristen Wig is no longer going to be on SNL. I love her like my kid loves cake. Sad day Kristen Wig you're leaving some big shoes to fill.

  1. hahaha! Your nails look fabulous! I can well understand why they were on your list.... but then I have a three year old so I've been there!! Have only had my nails painted once in that whole three years. He thinks it's fabulous and wants me to paint them blue next. Will definitely try your tips when I get around to it!

  2. Great color! I love Essie polish! They have the best colors!

  3. I painted my nails this weekend too! for the first time in a LOOOOOONG time. I also used to always go outside the lines. I used a pale pink called ballet slipper by essie and I love it!

I've just recently found your blog and haven't read through all the archives yet but I went to school in Baltimore and was wondering what neighborhood you all lived in. Your baltimore rowhouse is sooo cute and I love the kitchen!

  4. Thanks so much ladies! I feel like a new woman. @Jules we lived in Charles Village & we miss it a lot. Welcome to the blog ;.)

  5. Pretty! But you started out ahead of a lot of others because you were born with beautiful hands! I would know..... Mom

  6. your nails look great, I do my nails all they time mostly because I never have time to go get them done since I'm always in a hurry. My mom showed me how to do them a few years back. I'm glad you were able to do them yourself :)

    Yadi B.

  7. Oh, that is a great tip! Will definitely give the banana a go next time I paint my nails!

  8. This is hilarious… yesterday I did the same thing. I did my first attempt at a quality home manicure. I never been able to replicate the salons before, but I told my self that as I’m 31 and I should have by now be able to paint my own nails. So I got serious, got my supplies out and sure it took me several hours but it look fabulous. I’ll be adding a banana to my supplies next time.
